TESOL Teaching Practice and Online Practicum

Understand how trainee English teachers move from methodology and lesson planning to practice teaching, observation, feedback, reflection and professional evidence. Then explore how the Cambridge Veritas CVTE® pathway connects training input with observed teaching practice.

Professional teacher preparation

What Is TESOL Teaching Practice?

TESOL teaching practice is the applied part of learning to teach English to speakers of other languages. It asks a trainee to turn language awareness and methodology into decisions for a particular group of learners. Instead of only describing how a lesson should work, the trainee plans, delivers and evaluates teaching.

A practicum is the broader structure that organises this experience. Depending on the provider, it may combine classroom observation, lesson planning, microteaching, teaching with learners, tutor feedback, peer observation, written reflection and portfolio evidence. The important question is not only how many activities are listed, but how clearly each activity produces evidence of teaching development.

Observed teaching practice adds an external perspective. A trainer or authorised observer examines what happened during the lesson against defined criteria. Useful feedback refers to specific teaching and learner behaviour—such as an instruction that was too long, a task that did not match the objective or a check that revealed incomplete understanding.

The cycle becomes professionally valuable when the trainee uses that feedback. Reflection should lead to a revised plan, a clearer instruction, a different interaction pattern or a better way of checking learning. That link between evidence and improvement distinguishes practicum work from merely delivering a presentation.

The practicum cycle

From TESOL Theory to Teaching Evidence

The exact sequence varies, but strong teacher-practice design connects these six stages rather than treating teaching as an isolated performance.

  1. 01

    Theory and methodology

Connect language awareness and teaching methodology to decisions you can explain and apply.

  2. 02

    Lesson planning

Define an observable objective, anticipate learner needs and prepare a coherent sequence.

  3. 03

    Practice teaching

Deliver a focused lesson or teaching segment and collect evidence from learner responses.

  4. 04

    Observation

Use trainer or peer observation to compare the intended plan with what happened during delivery.

  5. 05

    Feedback

Turn specific observations into practical changes for instructions, interaction and assessment.

  6. 06

    Reflection and portfolio

Document the evidence, evaluate progress and improve a later teaching attempt.

Teaching Practice in the CVTE® Pathway

The current Cambridge Veritas Certificate in TESOL page describes a 120-hour live online cohort combining language awareness, skills methodology, lesson planning and classroom management with applied teacher development.

Its published pathway states that trainees plan and deliver real lessons, receive expert feedback, complete peer observations, submit assignments and build a professional teaching portfolio. The course page also describes observed teaching practice and an internship pathway for eligible completion.

Cohort schedules, assessment briefs, learner arrangements and eligibility conditions can change. Review the current course page and confirm requirements with Cambridge Veritas before making an enrolment decision.

What Should a TESOL Teaching Portfolio Show?

A portfolio should connect selected evidence to your development as a teacher. Include only materials you are entitled to share and protect learner privacy.

  • A lesson plan with one measurable learning objective
  • Materials or slides that directly support the objective
  • A recording or observation record where consent permits
  • Trainer and peer feedback linked to observable teaching
  • A reflective note explaining what you would retain or change
  • Revised planning that demonstrates how feedback was applied
  • Selected assignments showing language and methodology awareness
  • A clear description of your role, learner group and teaching context

Choose the right evidence

Microteaching, Observed Teaching and a TESOL Practicum

These terms can overlap, but they should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.

FormatTypical focusUseful evidenceImportant limitation
MicroteachingA short lesson segment or one teaching skillFocused delivery, feedback and reflectionMay not represent a complete lesson or longer teaching context
Observed teaching practiceA lesson reviewed against defined criteriaObserver notes, feedback, plan and reflective responseQuality depends on the observation process and criteria
TESOL practicumA structured body of applied teacher-development workPlanning, observation, teaching, feedback and portfolio evidenceRequirements and teaching hours vary between providers

Can a TESOL Practicum Work Online?

Online teaching practice can produce meaningful evidence when the programme defines the teaching context, learner participation, observation method, feedback process and privacy responsibilities. Video conferencing alone does not make an activity a practicum; the learning cycle and evidence matter.

Before enrolling, ask who observes the lesson, what rubric is used, how feedback is recorded, whether a later attempt is required and what portfolio evidence you may retain. If practice involves real learners, confirm how consent, safeguarding and recording are handled.

An online format can also develop skills relevant to contemporary English teaching: managing breakout rooms, sharing digital materials, monitoring interaction, checking understanding remotely and maintaining learner engagement without relying on physical proximity.

Practicum questions

TESOL Teaching Practice FAQ

What is TESOL teaching practice?

TESOL teaching practice is the applied part of teacher development in which a trainee plans and delivers English-language teaching, receives observation and feedback, and reflects on evidence from the lesson.

What is a TESOL practicum?

A TESOL practicum is a structured period of practice teaching and related professional evidence. Requirements vary by provider, but may include lesson planning, observation, teaching, tutor feedback, peer review, reflection and portfolio work.

Can TESOL teaching practice be completed online?

Teaching practice can be organised online when the programme provides a suitable teaching context, observation process, feedback method and clear evidence requirements. Confirm the current cohort arrangements with the provider before enrolling.

What is observed teaching practice?

Observed teaching practice means that a trainer or authorised observer reviews a trainee’s lesson or teaching segment against defined criteria and provides feedback based on what occurred during the session.

Is microteaching the same as a TESOL practicum?

Not necessarily. Microteaching is usually a short, focused teaching demonstration. A practicum may be broader and can include planning, observation, teaching experience, feedback, reflection and portfolio evidence across more than one task.

Does the Cambridge Veritas TESOL programme include teaching practice?

The current CVTE programme page describes lesson planning, observed teaching practice, peer observation, assignments, expert feedback and professional portfolio development. Check the course page or speak with Cambridge Veritas for current cohort requirements.

How is TESOL teaching practice assessed?

Assessment may examine objective alignment, lesson structure, subject accuracy, instructions, learner engagement, checking understanding, feedback, classroom communication, time management and reflective improvement. The exact rubric depends on the programme task.

How does teaching practice help an English-teaching portfolio?

It produces evidence such as lesson plans, materials, observation records, feedback and reflection. A curated portfolio can show how you plan, teach, respond to evidence and improve over time.
