📖 B1-B2 Grammar⏱️ 3 min read

Learning Objective

Possessives and Apostrophes

Place possessive apostrophes accurately and choose a natural possessive structure for people, organisations, time, and things.

Clear Explanation

Add 's to most singular nouns and irregular plurals; add an apostrophe after a regular plural ending in s. Apostrophes do not form ordinary plurals or possessive pronouns.

Form and Structure

Form

singular noun + 's; regular plural noun + '; irregular plural noun + 's

Model Example

“The student's notes were clear.”

Style guides differ on singular names ending in s. Choose a consistent house style, such as James's report, unless a required editorial standard says otherwise.

Meaning and Use

Joint possession

When two people share one thing, mark the final name.

“Asha and Leo's office”

Separate possession

When each person owns something separately, mark both names.

“Asha's and Leo's laptops”

Possessive alternatives

An of-phrase is often natural for inanimate relationships, though 's is common with time and organisations.

“the end of the road; a day's work”
