What you will be able to do

  • Review all four criteria
  • Diagnose a hesitation
  • Learn vocabulary you can retrieve

Review all four criteria

Official Speaking assessment considers fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Confidence is helpful but is not a separate scoring criterion.

Diagnose a hesitation

A pause can reflect idea planning, word retrieval or uncertainty about grammar. Listen to the context before deciding that speaking faster is the solution.

Learn vocabulary you can retrieve

Practise useful combinations in your own responses. A recognised word in a notebook is not yet language you can use spontaneously.

Prioritise intelligibility

Work on features that obscure the message, including stress or unclear sound contrasts. A regional accent does not need to disappear.

Work through an original example

A learner pauses before every example because they decide on the example while speaking.

They practise selecting one concrete experience before responding, then explain it with familiar language. A second task checks whether the account becomes easier to follow.

Practice commentary

Why this version works

Answer: The target is planning and development, not mechanically removing silence.

Practise, check and try a changed task

Record a response and label one difficulty under the relevant criterion. Choose a small practice task for that difficulty.

After practice, answer a fresh prompt. Compare relevance and ease of understanding, not only duration or the number of advanced words.

  • Check the meaning against the original task, rather than rewarding impressive wording alone.
  • Keep one concrete observation and one next action; avoid treating a single attempt as a complete assessment.

Continue with focused practice

Use the exercise to identify the kind of feedback you need. The IELTS Preparation programme page describes the current learning format and practice. Compare its syllabus with your own task, starting level and available time before choosing training. Course participation alone does not establish professional competence or guarantee an outcome.
