What you will be able to do
- Expect conversation plus short diagnostic tasks.
- The tutor should watch reasoning, not only score answers.
- The student should learn something during the first meeting.
- Parents should receive a clear, bounded next-step summary.
What to share before the session
- Current course and grade level
- Recent assessment or teacher feedback
- Topics that feel easy and difficult

A productive first-session flow
| Stage | Purpose | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome and goals | Build rapport and hear the student’s view | Student names one success and one barrier |
| Short diagnostic | Sample prerequisites and current topics | Tutor records strategies and errors |
| Focused teaching | Address one high-value gap | Student applies a new or clarified idea |
| Independent check | Remove support | Fresh problem completed and explained |
| Plan | Set practice and review point | Specific next topic and routine |
What diagnosis should look like
A diagnostic is not simply a long test. The tutor may ask the student to think aloud, compare two solutions, graph a relationship or explain why a step is valid. These tasks reveal representations and misconceptions that an answer score can miss.
The tutor should distinguish what is known, what is available with a prompt and what is not yet secure. A single session produces a working hypothesis, not a permanent label.

Useful answers
Frequently asked questions
Should a first tutoring session be only a test?
No. It should gather evidence, but the student should also experience useful explanation, practice and a clear next step.
