Expect alternatives without assuming a trick
A conversation can mention several dates or plans naturally. Your task is to follow meaning, not reject the first detail automatically.
Track correction signals
Listen for changes such as “actually”, “instead” or an explicit rejection. The words matter together with what the speaker accepts.
Separate mention from selection
Hearing an option does not establish that it answers the question. Identify the final decision or relevant opinion.
Use transcripts after listening
A transcript can explain the error once you have attempted the audio. Reading a written conversation alone is a reasoning exercise, not listening practice.
Work through an original example
Original written illustration: “We first suggested Monday, but the room is unavailable. Thursday is confirmed.”
If asked for the confirmed day, Thursday answers the question. Monday explains the earlier proposal and is not the selected arrangement.
Practice commentary
Why this version works
Answer: This demonstrates correction logic; use real audio to practise hearing it in time.
Practise, check and try a changed task
Attempt an official listening sample without its transcript. Afterward, mark a detail you accepted too early.
Replay that section and explain the final decision. Then attempt a new recording so memory does not substitute for listening.
- Check the meaning against the original task, rather than rewarding impressive wording alone.
- Keep one concrete observation and one next action; avoid treating a single attempt as a complete assessment.
Continue with focused practice
Use the exercise to identify the kind of feedback you need. The IELTS Preparation programme page describes the current learning format and practice. Compare its syllabus with your own task, starting level and available time before choosing training. Course participation alone does not establish professional competence or guarantee an outcome.
Guided communication practice
Would focused feedback help your next attempt?
Compare the current syllabus and learning format with the communication task you want to improve.
Useful answers
Frequently asked questions
Is the first number always wrong?
No. Follow the meaning and actual changes.
Does mention make an option correct?
No. It must answer the question.
Should I read the transcript first?
Not when checking unaided listening performance.
Are written scripts audio practice?
No. They support analysis but do not test hearing.
