What you will be able to do
- Measure the delay
- Preview with a purpose
- Set a move-on rule
Measure the delay
Note whether time disappears in locating evidence, understanding it or comparing options. “Read faster” does not address every cause.
Preview with a purpose
Use headings and structure to understand where information may appear. Skimming should create orientation, not replace close reading at the evidence point.
Set a move-on rule
Choose a practice checkpoint for a blocked question and return later if possible. Test the rule against accuracy rather than treating it as universal.
Protect answer completion
Reading has no extra answer-transfer period. Check your test’s delivery instructions and leave time to review missing answers within the allocated section time.
Work through an original example
A learner spends six minutes on one uncertain heading while leaving several later questions unseen.
In practice, they mark the uncertainty and move on after a chosen checkpoint. They return with a clearer view of the passage’s organisation.
Practice commentary
Why this version works
Answer: The intervention changes allocation; it does not require reading every passage at the same speed.
Practise, check and try a changed task
Time one section and annotate where you stop. Classify the three longest delays.
Choose one change and test it on new material. Keep both time and accuracy so a quicker but less reliable approach is visible.
- Check the meaning against the original task, rather than rewarding impressive wording alone.
- Keep one concrete observation and one next action; avoid treating a single attempt as a complete assessment.
Continue with focused practice
Use the exercise to identify the kind of feedback you need. The IELTS Preparation programme page describes the current learning format and practice. Compare its syllabus with your own task, starting level and available time before choosing training. Course participation alone does not establish professional competence or guarantee an outcome.
Guided communication practice
Would focused feedback help your next attempt?
Compare the current syllabus and learning format with the communication task you want to improve.
Useful answers
Frequently asked questions
Must sections receive equal time?
Not necessarily; test a realistic allocation for your task demands.
Should I read every word first?
Choose reading depth according to purpose.
Is there extra transfer time?
No extra Reading transfer time is provided.
Does faster always mean better?
No. Efficient practice retains accurate evidence decisions.
