What you will be able to do
- Variables represent quantities, not mystery boxes.
- Equations describe equal relationships.
- Functions connect inputs to outputs.
- Graphs, tables and equations can describe the same relationship.
The four big ideas of Algebra 1
| Idea | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Expressions | How can a quantity be represented? | 3x + 5 |
| Equations and inequalities | Which values make a relationship true? | 3x + 5 = 20 |
| Functions | How does one quantity depend on another? | y = 3x + 5 |
| Representations | How do table, graph, rule and context connect? | Rate 3 and initial value 5 |
Example: preserve equality
Worked example 1
Solve 3x + 5 = 20.
- 1.Subtract 5 from both sides: 3x = 15.
- 2.Divide both sides by 3: x = 5.
Answer: x = 5
Check: 3(5) + 5 = 20.
Example: interpret a function
Worked example 1
A service costs C(h) = 12h + 30.
- 1.30 is the starting cost when h = 0.
- 2.12 is the cost per hour.
- 3.For 4 hours: C(4) = 48 + 30.
Answer: $78
Check: Units connect hours to dollars.

Frequently asked questions
Is Algebra 1 only about solving for x?
No. It also includes functions, graphs, systems, inequalities, polynomials, quadratics, exponentials and mathematical modelling.
What should I review before Algebra 1?
Signed numbers, fractions, ratios, coordinate graphs, properties and multi-step arithmetic are especially useful.
