What you will be able to do
- Read what the visual measures
- Identify the main pattern
- Separate overview from detail
Read what the visual measures
Check units, dates and categories before describing changes. A percentage and an absolute count cannot be exchanged without changing the meaning.
Identify the main pattern
Choose features that characterise the visual: direction, contrast, stages or substantial change. Listing every number can hide the pattern.
Separate overview from detail
State the important picture clearly, then support it with selected evidence. Do not invent explanations for why a graph changed.
Adapt to maps and processes
A process overview may describe its broad sequence; a map overview may identify major transformations. Not every visual contains an upward trend.
Work through an original example
Fictional data: cycle trips rise from 20 to 35 thousand while car trips fall from 60 to 45 thousand over the same period.
Overview: “Cycling increased while car use declined, although cars remained the more common option.” Detail paragraphs can then supply the figures and period.

Why this version works
Answer: The overview captures direction and relative position without inventing a cause.
Practise, check and try a changed task
Write an overview of the fictional data without copying all four values. Then add one accurate comparison using units.
Check each statement against the data. Change one final value and revise the overview if the main relationship changes.
- Check the meaning against the original task, rather than rewarding impressive wording alone.
- Keep one concrete observation and one next action; avoid treating a single attempt as a complete assessment.
Continue with focused practice
Use the exercise to identify the kind of feedback you need. The IELTS Preparation programme page describes the current learning format and practice. Compare its syllabus with your own task, starting level and available time before choosing training. Course participation alone does not establish professional competence or guarantee an outcome.
Guided communication practice
Would focused feedback help your next attempt?
Compare the current syllabus and learning format with the communication task you want to improve.
