What you will be able to do
- Separate topic from instruction
- Make the position usable
- Explain the connection
Separate topic from instruction
A question about technology can ask for advantages, causes or an opinion. Identify all required parts before choosing ideas.
Make the position usable
State a position you can explain consistently. A vague promise to discuss both sides is not itself a clear answer to an opinion question.
Explain the connection
After a claim, show how or why it matters. Rephrasing the claim with synonyms does not add reasoning.
Review relevance before polishing
Check whether each paragraph advances the answer. Accurate sentences can still be irrelevant to the specific question.
Work through an original example
Original claim: “Libraries are important because they are useful.” This repeats the evaluation without developing it.
Revision: “Libraries provide shared access to study space and reference material. This matters for students whose homes are crowded or who cannot buy specialist books.”
Practice commentary
Why this version works
Answer: The revision explains a mechanism and identifies who benefits; it does not invent a research statistic.
Practise, check and try a changed task
Choose an original opinion question and write two claims. Add a how-or-why explanation and a relevant example to each.
Remove any sentence that only repeats the claim. Ask whether the examples answer this question rather than the general topic.
- Check the meaning against the original task, rather than rewarding impressive wording alone.
- Keep one concrete observation and one next action; avoid treating a single attempt as a complete assessment.
Continue with focused practice
Use the exercise to identify the kind of feedback you need. The IELTS Preparation programme page describes the current learning format and practice. Compare its syllabus with your own task, starting level and available time before choosing training. Course participation alone does not establish professional competence or guarantee an outcome.
Guided communication practice
Would focused feedback help your next attempt?
Compare the current syllabus and learning format with the communication task you want to improve.
