The ESP approach
English for Specific Purposes—usually shortened to ESP—is language learning designed around a clearly defined professional, occupational or academic need. A learner studies the English required to complete relevant tasks: a nurse explaining care, a lawyer advising a client, an engineer presenting a design, or a researcher discussing evidence.
ESP does not replace professional education, licensing or technical expertise. It helps people communicate the knowledge they already have more clearly and appropriately in English. Course activities therefore connect terminology with realistic documents, conversations, decisions and audiences.

Practical professional communication
The exact curriculum changes by industry, but each pathway connects language development to meaningful professional action.
Build the vocabulary, terminology, tone and expressions used in your field.
Practise realistic interactions, decisions and role-play rather than isolated language drills.
Work with relevant documents such as emails, reports, notes, proposals or case summaries.
Use trainer feedback to improve clarity, accuracy, structure and professional appropriacy.
These programmes support working professionals, students entering specialist fields, graduates preparing for international roles, multilingual teams and organisations that need clearer workplace communication. They assume subject interest or experience; they do not award professional licences.
Faculty-led sessions combine guided language work with speaking, writing, role-play, simulations and feedback. Current cohort dates, time zones, session length and independent workload are confirmed on the programme page or before payment.
B1 CEFR or above is recommended because learners participate actively. Assessment is course-specific. Successful learners receive the certificate described on the programme page, with a verification link where stated.
Understand CEFR levelsTeams and organisations
Hospitals, law firms, engineering companies, aviation organisations, finance teams, universities, hotels, HR departments, sales groups and support teams can request a dedicated ESP cohort. Cambridge Veritas can discuss team size, role-specific communication needs, scheduling and current group pricing before proposing a programme.
