A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.
Example: Nevertheless, other people assert that athletes deserve their salary.
An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress.
Example: They have a very short career, as can only play at highest performance during a very limited number of years.
Something, typically money, awarded to someone in recognition of loss, suffering, or injury.
Example: In summary, I believe that athletes deserve a huge compensation for their work.

(of a person, attitude, or action) not showing a proper sense of responsibility.
Example: Some people argue that is irresponsible to pay such amount of money to people who has just borne with a natural gift to play certain sport.

In spite of that; notwithstanding; all the same.
An act of presenting a play, concert, or other form of entertainment.
A person engaged in a specified activity, especially a sport, as a main paid occupation rather than as a pastime.
Example: Nowadays, it is acknowledged that sport professionals earn huge salaries that exceed other respected professionals by far.

Provide funds for (a project or activity or the person carrying it out).
Example: Companies invest a lot of money to sponsor teams and this creates an extra pressure on the players.
