This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to the Internet & communication in Communication.


co-author:

verb

Be a joint author of (a book, paper, or report).

Example: Articles can be co-authored, business deals can be finalized, degrees can be earned and at times even medical advice can be given- and all of this is just a click away.

gadgets:

noun

A small mechanical or electronic device or tool, especially an ingenious or novel one.

Example: Electronic mail, instant messages, web cameras and microphones; all these gadgets and programs make the presence of the other person more real.

global:

adjective

Relating to the whole world; worldwide.

Example: A global village, that is certainly what the world feels like nowadays.

harassment:

noun

Aggressive pressure or intimidation.

Example: However, the internet can also be a major source of harassment.

invade:

(of an armed force) enter (a country or region) so as to subjugate or occupy it.

Example: Spammers and hackers can invade your privacy and get personal/confidential information, which otherwise they will never get access to.

shortcomings:

A fault or failure to meet a certain standard, typically in a person's character, a plan, or a system.

Example: I can certainly tolerate its shortcomings any day, as long as it keeps me close to my loved ones.

snail mail:

The ordinary postal system as opposed to email.

Example: As a romantic, I will always look forward to getting an occasional letter in the snail mail.

spammers:

A person or organization that sends irrelevant or unsolicited messages over the internet, typically to large numbers of users, for the purposes of advertising, phishing, spreading malware, etc.

Example: Spammers and hackers can invade your privacy and get personal/confidential information, which otherwise they will never get access to.

workaholic:

A person who compulsively works excessively hard and long hours.

Example: Worse yet, if you were a workaholic, you might never experience that stress-free vacation ever again in your life.

world wide web:

The World Wide Web—commonly referred to as WWW, W3, or the Web—is an interconnected system of public webpages accessible through the Internet.

Example: With the help of the world wide web, you can reach out and get to know people you might never have met in person.
