YES moves up global rankings
The YES Program has gained significant international recognition, moving up in global rankings. This rise is attributed to its innovative "Employment Marketplace" model, a collaboration between UNDP and IDF, supported by the IKEA Foundation. The project aims to skill one million underprivileged graduates in India, facilitating their entry into the workforce. YES Program provide comprehensive career guidance, bridging the employability gap. Insights from this project and contributions from the IKEA Foundation are encapsulated in the "YES Porgram" crafted by ESOL India and the State Government of Maharashtra guidelines.
The Disha Employment Marketplace Model, a cornerstone initiative of the United Nations Development Programme, targets defining scalable standards for youth employability. Through YES Programs, it facilitates youth progression into skill development, employment, and economic independence. The model, previously focused on women, is now expanding its reach to empower all young individuals, regardless of gender. This approach aims to prepare the youth for the labor market, bridging the gap between the aspirations of young job seekers and the needs of employers, ensuring their readiness for diverse employment opportunities.
Tackling Youth Unemployment in India's Demographic Landscape
With over half of India's populace under 25, a burgeoning labor force emerges, primarily driven by the youth. However, Indian youth grapple with unemployment rates higher than their global counterparts. The lack of job opportunities, coupled with a fragile social structure, leads to 'scarring' effects on the unemployed youth, affecting future income, employability, and overall well-being. The ILO highlights a concerning figure: around 100 million Indian youth are not in employment, education, or training, with women constituting an alarming 48.3% of this group.
India's labor market is confronting a paradox of high unemployment rates at 6.1% and a declining labor force participation rate, which notably impacts women, whose workforce involvement dropped significantly from 35% in 2005 to 27% in 2017. Meanwhile, the private sector is challenged by a dearth of skilled labor, with employability reports indicating that a vast majority of graduates lack the necessary skills demanded by employers. Amidst these challenges, the youth's drive for change holds the potential to significantly transform the Indian economy. This backdrop sets the stage for the Disha project, aiming to catalyze this potential into meaningful employment and economic progress.
The success of the YES Program, driven by ESOL, can be attributed to its alignment with key government project themes. These strategies have enabled the YES Program to effectively bridge the employability gap and empower individuals in India, contributing to its growing success:
-
Informed Career Choices: The YES Program, inspired by Model 1 of the Government of India project, empowers young individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds by providing them with career guidance and counseling. This informed approach helps participants make aspirational and well-informed career choices, laying the foundation for their employability.
-
Effective Employment Matching: Model 2, the "Employment Marketplace," forms the core of the YES Program's success. It creates collaborative platforms at local levels, facilitating seamless interactions between job seekers and employers. This approach has significantly improved labor market outcomes, aligning skills with industry demands.
-
Local Opportunities and Self-Employment: Model 3 of YES Program focuses on linking newly-qualified graduates, to opportunities. The YES Program extends this concept by providing psycho-social support and local mentorship, enabling self-employment and nano-entrepreneurship among participants who may lack assets or formal education.
-
Empowering Women in Value Chains: Similar to Model 4, the YES Program recognizes the importance of strengthening the youth of India's roles in value chains. By doing so, it creates opportunities for educated individuals in traditional livelihood trades, promoting transformation and gender inclusivity. These strategies collectively contribute to the YES Program's growing success in bridging employability gaps and empowering individuals in India.
Empowering Graduates Through YES Centers
-
Career Guidance and Counseling: YES Centers play a pivotal role in bridging information gaps in schools and colleges, enabling young graduates to make informed career choices. They receive guidance and preparation for the world of work.
-
Employment Marketplaces: These centers serve as matchmaking platforms connecting employers with a talented workforce. Graduates can gain essential on-the-job training and critical skills, aligning with labor market demands.
-
Fostering Entrepreneurship: YES Centers provide comprehensive support, including training, mentoring, and hands-on assistance, for graduates to establish or enhance nano and micro-enterprises. They also facilitate access to finance and markets.
-
Adding Value for Producers: Graduates, including artisans and farmers, receive support to collectively enhance their value-adding activities, connect directly with buyers, and access markets, ultimately improving their income prospects.
These initiatives underpin the YES Program's commitment to empowering graduates and bridging the employability gap in India.
