At Cambridge Veritas, we believe in the power of transformation through education. Our Voice and Accent Trainer Certification program has been a catalyst for change in the lives of many professionals. Today, we're excited to share the inspiring journey of Libera, one of our dedicated alumni, who recently joined Krish for a special Round Table discussion.

Finding the Right Path: From Passion to Profession

Libera's journey began with a simple love for the English language. As someone who runs English programs at her organization, she recognized that mastering the language goes beyond grammar—it encompasses correct pronunciation and effective teaching methodologies.

"I really love English... it's the love for the language," Libera shared.

"Then I realized it's not just to do with grammar, there's a lot more to it, especially how to pronounce correctly and how to actually teach others."

Her determination led her to persistently track down the Voice and Accent Trainer Certification program at Cambridge Veritas for three months during a period of institutional revamping. This persistence speaks volumes about her dedication to professional growth.

Breaking Through Barriers: The 'Aha' Moment

Every learning journey has its pivotal moments. For Libera, it was during an advanced phonetic script activity where participants were given symbols and had to convert them into English words.

"That was the toughest... it was as if I was a walking dictionary, trying to understand which symbol makes which sound," she recalled. "That was the 'aha' moment that gave me a lot of confidence... it's not that difficult, it is possible."

This breakthrough reinforced her belief that with constructive learning, one can master even the most challenging aspects of pronunciation training.

From Theory to Application: Real-World Impact

The true test of any educational program lies in its practical application. Libera has been implementing her learning in both personal and professional spheres. At home, she practices with her toddler, establishing correct pronunciation foundations from an early age. "When he speaks, it's more like an accent that comes out... I'm able to understand where he's making the mistake and trying to tell him how it's pronounced." Professionally, she's developing content for her colleagues, drawing from the creative exercises and structured approach she experienced during the program.

"I started putting together content for the program... I go back to refer to what you taught us and come up with creative exercises."

The Before and After: A Transformation Story

Libera entered the program with a common misconception—that voice and accent training was primarily about acquiring an accent. Her perspective shifted significantly as she progressed through the course.

"I came in thinking I'm actually going to get an accent... that is when I realized it's not about the accent, it's actually about pronouncing the words correctly," she explained. This fundamental shift in understanding represents the core philosophy of our approach at Cambridge Veritas.

Learning Approach: What Worked Best

The program's multifaceted teaching methodology resonated particularly well with Libera. She highlighted two approaches that proved most effective:

  1. Listen and Read: Where the trainer reads a paragraph, allowing participants to hear correct pronunciation before practicing themselves.
  2. Repeat After Me: A direct drilling technique where participants immediately mimic the correct pronunciation.

These methods, coupled with interactive exercises like crosswords and identification games, created an engaging learning environment that accommodated different learning styles.

Words of Wisdom for Future Learners

For those hesitant about improving their accent, Libera offers encouraging advice: "The language is built by humans, so if it's built by a human, another human can learn it—it's not an impossible task."

She emphasizes that improvement is a personal journey: "It's not about comparison with others. It's about comparison with my own self—am I doing better today than yesterday? Even if it's a minute fraction of improvement, that's good enough."

The Cambridge Veritas Experience in Three Words

When asked to describe her journey with Cambridge Veritas in three words, Libera thoughtfully chose:

  1. Excellence: "There's a match between what was offered and what was delivered."
  2. Creative: "The activities are very creative... I like to think outside the box."
  3. Integrity: "What's been told to me has been offered."

She added a fourth bonus word—Fun: "It's not boring, there's a lot of fun element... which is very much needed."
